MOMO Ferrari Team Takes 2nd and 4th at Daytona Finale

DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA - The MOMO / Yokohama Ferrari team ended the 1996 IMSA Exxon World SportsCar Championship series today at the Daytona International Speedway with a second and a fourth place finish under very rainy conditions.

"The weather was the most important factor in today's race results. We elected to start on car on rain tires and the car I drove (#30) on intermediates.
Didier Theys drove solo for a second place finish in the #66 MOMO / Yokohama / Lista / Landshark Racing Ferrari 333 SP. His teammate, Gerry Jackson, opted to forgo his stint and have Theys go all out for the win.

MOMO Corse team owner/driver Gianpiero Moretti and Massimiliano "Max" Papis took their #30 MOMO / Yokohama Ferrari 333 SP to a fourth place finish.

The #20 Dyson Ford of Butch Leitzinger and John Paul, Jr. collected the victory with a 29.347 margin of victory of Theys. The #15 Oldsmobile of Wayne Taylor and Jim Pace took third place. Taylor started the race in the #4 Oldsmobile, thus not being able to collect points in the #15 car.

However, the nine points he received for his race start was enough for him to capture the 1996 IMSA Exxon World SportsCar Driver's Championship.

Taylor finished the season with 261 points to Papis' 245. Leitzinger's victory assured him third place with 239 points and Theys took fourth with 223. Ross Bentley rounded out the top five with 157 points.

The 1996 World SportsCar Manufacturer's Championship was won by a single point by Oldsmobile over Ferrari. The two actually tied with today's finish, but IMSA's tie-breaker is based on total number of victories and Oldsmobile had four victories to Ferrari's three.

"We had very good results for Team MOMO this year." said Papis, known to mostly as "Mad Max." "This has been a very special year for me, I have to thank MOMO, Gianpiero Moretti and Ferrari. Without them and my commitment and will to win, we would not have had such good results."

"The rain conditions were okay for me to drive," said Theys. "We had a good rain set-up, but were a little down on horsepower on the straightaway. It has been a very competitive season for both the manufacturer's and driver's championships."

It started to rain very hard as soon as we got the green flag." said Moretti. "I have never seen one so lucky as the Oldsmobile team (of Wayne Taylor). They had no problems with the car all season until the last race, but here it did not matter for the driver's championship and they had a second car for the manufacturer's championship."

The MOMO Ferrari team collected victories this season at Road Atlanta, Lime Rock Park and Watkins Glen. Papis collected four pole positions and four fastest laps. Didier Theys had one pole and two fastest laps.
