MOMO / Yokohama Ferraris Set Front Row at Mosport Park
BOWMANVILLE, ONTARIO -- Massimiliano "Max" Papis and teammate Didier Theys set new qualifying records today at the Chrysler Mosport 500 Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada in the IMSA Exxon World SportsCar Championship series.
|Car owner/driver Gianpiero Moretti brought fellow Italian "Mad Max" Papis to the IMSA series at Daytona in February, where he promptly went out and set the fastest race lap in one of the most memorable 24 hours of Daytona races in recent history. So far this season Papis has collected four poles and four fastest laps, all records, as well as three victories with Moretti, all in only eight outings to date.|
The pair put their red MOMO Ferrari 333 SPs on the front row in a brief and exciting
qualifying session, setting new records at the 2,459 - mile circuit. "Mad Max"
Papis posted a time of 1:11.769 for an average speed of 123.34 mph.
This is the fourth pole in his first IMSA season, collecting poles at Sebring, Road Atlanta and Watkins Glen. The Papis / Theys teammates also set a front row of Ferraris at Road Atlanta, posting the number one and two spots at qualifying.
Theys' qualifying time of 1:12.668 and 121.81 mph barely edged out
the #20 Ford R&S MK III of Butch Leitzinger, who set a time of
1:12.682, 121.79 mpg.
Wayne Taylor posted the fourth fastest time with 1:13.369, 120.65 mph, in his Oldsmobile R&S MK III. Fermin Velez rounded out the top five in his Scandia Ferrari 333 SP with a time of 1:13.419 and a speed of 120.57.
"We have been working the past couple days to get the proper set-up on the car. We got a very good set-up this morning and a new set of Yokohama tires and pushed 100%.
It is fantastic for Team MOMO to have the front row, and it is exactly
our plan. The car is good and we will play our strategy for the race,"
said the 26 year old Papis.
"The key for tomorrow's race will be playing the traffic properly, Mosport suits our Ferrari very well, but the Riley & Scott chassis is usually faster in the race than in qualifying. It will be tough and the race will not be decided until the last 15 laps I believe," added the rising star, who has recently been competing in the IndyCar with the Arciero-Wells team.
|Moretti, Papis and Theys are teamed in the two #30 and #66 Kevin Doran - prepared MOMO / Yokohama Ferrari 333 SPs. Papis currently sites second in the Exxon World SportsCar driver's championship with 191 points, just five points shy of leader Wayne Taylor. Theys is third with 157 points. Oldsmobile leads the tight Manufacturer's championship with 170 points to Ferraris 168. Additional sponsorship for the MOMO Corse team for 1996 comes from Breed Technology, Lista International, Automobile Magazine and Brembo Brakes.- ø|
